“Good Soldiers Don’t Rape: The Stories We Tell About Military Sexual Violence”

Professor and researcher Megan MacKenzie is “a feminist scholar interested in war, security studies, post-conflict recovery and reconstruction, and military culture.” With this image commission, she wanted to visualize a soldier, but with emphasis on the emotive quality (i.e. a non-literal implication of trauma / PTSD / dread / fear). The soldier’s appearance needed to be somewhat “generalized” in order to properly reflect the broad focus of the book (i.e. not limited to a particular military), and avoid distracting details or visual clichés.
The image was
was created and composed in order for the publisher to use as they wished in their design layout (i.e. at high resolution with ample image bleed), which was not known at time of commissioning.
