Seeing the potential for how an illustration could be more evocative and eye-catching than stock imagery of locusts, which tend to show either the swarm or just an individual insect, Prof. Dolbee commissioned this cover. The imagery makes specific references to the book’s research (the locust species and the kind of territory they cover).

was created and composed in order for the publisher to use as they wished in their design layout (i.e. at high resolution with ample image bleed), which was not known at time of commissioning.
